Since today it’s “Maha Shivaratri” we will start our day with a simple, most common or we can say a compulsory dish for fasting which is generally prepared in Maharashtra. This is made out of sago which makes you full throughout the day. This dish is very common at my home as we prepare at least once in a week since my mom does fasting on every Sunday. 'Varyach Bhaat' which is made from Vari tandul (samo rice) is also a dish which is prepared during the fasting.
Ingredients:
Sabudana/sago | 2 cups soaked overnight |
Ghee | 1 table spoon |
Cumin seeds | 1 tea spoon |
Green chilly | 3 finely chopped |
Potato | 2 small finely chopped |
Salt | To taste |
Sugar | 1 tea spoon |
Roasted groundnut powder/danyacha koot | 2-3 table spoons |

1. Wash sabudana and drain all the water, add little water about ¼ glass to 2 cups of sabudana
and keep it for soaking overnight.
2. In a frying pan heat a table spoon of ghee, when heated add the cumin seeds, chopped green
chilly.
3. Add finely chopped potato to this. Keep it for 5-8 mins until potatoes get fried well. Add
roasted groundnuts.

4. Add salt, sugar, roasted groundnut powder to the soaked sabudana and mix well.
5. Add the sabudana mixture to the pan. Mix well.
6. Keep this until sabudana gets fried well, around 6-8 mins. Keep stirring in between so that it does
not get stick to the bottom.

7. Serve this with curd / buttermilk.
Notes:
- I like the taste of potatoes so have added it more, you can vomit if you do not like.
- I am mixing the salt, sugar, roasted groundnut powder to soaked sabudana directly so that they get mixed well.
- You can add coriander, turmeric powder to this if you are not fasting.
- Since I used roasted groundnuts I added it at the last otherwise you can add it soon after adding the chopped potatoes.
- Roasted groundnut powder is prepared by dry roasting the groundnuts, by peeling the outer skin and then grind it coarsely for few seconds. You can do it using mortar-pestle as well.
- You can also boil the potato chop it and then add.
